Poison Cross is the last in the Place Prints series and in a way it comes full circle and finishes where it started. The first episode was set in Warwickshire and starred Richard Lynch. The last episode is about a journey towards Warwickshire and one of the actors is Richard Lynch.

My impression (which could easily be wrong) was that the other pieces in the Place Prints series were written in lockdown, or at least recorded in lockdown. Here We Stay was recorded from a live performance in 2015.

This Place Print is sad in lots of ways, but it is also beautiful and inspiring. It describes a really terrible event which I wouldn’t want to happen to anyone, but it is about sticking to your beliefs and not giving in and I think that can be very admirable. I am glad we now live in a world where so many different beliefs are permitted, though of course we still have a long way to go in some areas.

If there is another series like Place Prints, I’ve never
watched, heard or read it. Every Place Print not only tells a different story, it
tells its story in a different way. The imagination David Rudkin has put into
these stories has been eye-opening and I’m sure that when we’re allowed to go
out again, I’ll be looking at places in new ways – and of course I’d love to
visit some of the places described in this series.

This is amazing! It’s the story of a walk in Cornwall, following
a path, past trees and bushes. It sounds quite boring when I say it like that
but it isn’t boring at all.
It’s different from the others, it doesn’t have the creepy,
supernatural feel but it’s so powerful. I closed my eyes for this and maybe you
should too. David Rudkin has written this so clearly and so well, it felt like
I could see everything that was described. It was an unbelievable experience,
the voice says what you see and you kind of see it but then you hear more
details and whatever you were imagining kind of twists and changes in your head
till it really looks like what is being described. It’s told in the second
person (which can be really annoying in books but it works with something like
this) so you literally are being told what you can see.

stories feature the same characters, but they are separate. Part 1 was reviewed
yesterday.
After her Stone Age experiences in the
last episode, Kerry finds herself once more in a difficult and potentially
supernatural situation. She’s out with Sharon, Gary and Dean again, driving
through the Sussex countryside. It’s a bit too late to get home before dark,
but if they can get home before daylight, that would suit them rather
well.

The fourth episode in the Place Prints
is about a group of four students. They’re supposed to be filming for their
media studies course and one of them, Kerry, thinks a castle will be the
perfect location.
Her enthusiasm is not matched by her
friends’. Gary and Dean seem more interested in messing around, teasing Kerry
for her interest in the castle. Sharon feels the ground is wholly unsuitable
for her shoes. But the four of them continue… and Kerry is overtaken by a
strange sensation.

There are a lot of places in the UK
called Grim’s Ditch. There is even one not that far away from where I live,
though I have never been there. At least, I don’t think I have.
This Grim’s Ditch is in North Wessex,
or Berkshire. Grim is another name for Woden, who I know best as Wotan in Der
Ring des Nieblungen by Richard Wagner. The Anglo Saxons believe he was the
one who dug the ditches. Perhaps he was hoping to make a river and attract
English Rhinemaidens.

drive past it on the motorway, you might catch a glimpse of it… sometimes.
There are times when it’s invisible.

Place Prints is a series of short
audio dramas written by David Rudkin, focusing on different parts of the
British Isles. It seems to focus on very specific places with a story to tell,
places we probably wouldn’t know about unless we happened to live there.
