Available until: Unknown. You can rent for 48 hours.

Updating opera to the present day doesn’t always work. Our lives are so different from the way people lived when a lot of the most famous and best-loved operas were composed at least a hundred years ago so understandably, it can be very difficult to set them in the present day. I’m sure you’d also have big problems if you tried to set an opera like Dr Atomic in the 19th century. Everything would just seem wrong.

Available until: 10th January 2021

La bohѐme used to be my favourite opera. It was my first ever trip to the Royal Opera House. I couldn’t believe how posh it was, I was almost scared of going on those red carpets which was weird as I always thought I was born for the red carpet. But the Royal Opera House was so beautiful and so was La bohѐme.

169 years ago, a man called Henri Murger wrote a series of stories called Scènes de la vie de bohème. This inspired not one but two composers to write an opera called La bohème. Ruggero Leoncavallo’s 1897 opera is actually really good, but it is Puccini’s 1896 opera that was embraced by the public – and which inspired composer, lyricist and writer Jonathan Morgan to create a musical based on La bohème but set in Lower Manhattan in New York. Sadly he did not live to enjoy the success of the musical, he died the night before the Off-Broadway premiere in 1996. But the show has proved popular. There have been a number of UK productions including three in the West End and one in a paper mill, as well as an eight-year run on Broadway.

Available until: 28th March 2021

This opera is just so relatable. It was composed 100 years ago and I think it was set even earlier but starts with four guys sharing a flat which still happens all the time. They go out clubbing, they go out with their girlfriends, they have a bit of banter but they obviously like each other a lot and have a good friendship which is really lovely.
