CORAM BOY (Atmospheres 2021/Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama)****

Available until: 9th May 2021

Coram Boy appears to be incomplete, with only Part 1 featuring as part of this performance. But it’s a great opera and it’s free to watch so if you listen to it now, you’ll know if you like it and if you ever do get the opportunity to watch the full opera, you’ll know it’s worth paying for.

MESSIAH (Bristol Old Vic/English Concert/Erebus Ensemble)*****

Available until: If you buy a Season Pass you’ll have access until 28th February. Or you can rent it for 48 hours.

I love the Messiah. My mum sang it at the Royal Albert Hall and my uncle sang it at the Barbican but I didn’t go because I wasn’t born yet. It is a really beautiful piece of music by George Frideric Handel and this production is especially magical.

The Messiah isn’t a theatrical work. It is an oratorio which is written for a choir and four soloists – a soprano, a contralto or mezzo-soprano (or sometimes a counter tenor), a tenor and a bass or baritone, though sometimes there are extra soloists like having a counter tenor as well as a contralto. Something else that sometimes happens is that a boy treble will sing some of the soprano music and that happened in the Bristol Old Vic’s production.

Available until:  Sunday 20th December 2020

How wonderful to see a full live opera at the Royal Opera House once more! Of course, it was not possible to see this opera in person and might not have been as fully satisfying experience for them as it was for their online audience, but I really hope they were able to find some enjoyment in their excellent performances of this beautiful opera and to know that it was very much appreciated by those of us who are missing opera.
