No doubt I will be forcibly (and
rightly) corrected if I am wrong again, but I believe this is the only
Shakespeare Happy Hours production I haven’t yet watched. Not all have been
reviewed as the idea of Mobile Theatre was not conceived until many of us had
already watched approximately half of the plays, and with the high volume of
online theatre currently still available, it would be impractical to attempt to
go back and review everything at this stage. But this seems to be our last of
an excellent series.

I find Shakespeare plays quite
difficult because I’m not as clever as the other bloggers but I really enjoyed
this performance of The Tempest. It was really fun and it was very easy
to understand who the characters were and what was going on. I think it will
help me to understand other productions of The Tempest better in the
future too.

I almost didn’t want to watch this because I knew that when
I did, it would all be over. But I also really wanted to watch it because I
knew it would be brilliant and it was.
Mostly, TSMGO have presented Shakespeare’s First Folio plays
in order (as far as we can be sure of the correct order). I think the only
changes they made were posting the three parts of Henry VI in
chronological order (Part I was actually written last) and now swapping the
order of Henry VIII and The Tempest and ending with a more
popular work. I think both these decisions are really good. Henry VI
makes more sense in order and although there is something to celebrate at the
end of Henry VIII, it’s not a very well-known play and although it has a
beautiful ending, it ends quite quietly. The Tempest definitely ends
with more of a bang.

I think this is my fifth lockdown
performance of The Tempest, but I’m not bored with it yet. With all
Shakespeare’s plays, I feel every production is different and shows me
something new.
There were two ways this production
stood out as being different. Firstly, it was an all-male production. Many
people won’t like the idea of women being excluded from productions and I would
definitely want this to be the exception rather than the rule, but I do think
it’s interesting to see the roles played by men, especially as that’s how it
would have been in Shakespeare’s time.
The world hadn’t learned then that women are equal to men (and that
there are more than two genders anyway) and that is sad, but all-male
productions are part of our history and I was very interested to see this one.

This is my first ever Sofa Shakespeare production but it
won’t be my last because this was really good! It’s a really clever idea.
Anyone can sign up to be in it and I think they give you part of the text and
you can perform it any way you like then it’s all edited together into one
play.
