The After Dinner Joke wasn’t anything like what I was expecting based on the title. There isn’t very much about dinner and all the humour is very dark. But it was still really good.

It’s incredibly sexist of me, but when I saw the title of the play and saw it was about two friends, I immediately assumed it was two boys. When I saw it was actually two girls, I was quite surprised… but also happy. Not so happy with my sexism, but very happy with the play. All I’d done was read the title and the first line of the synopsis and already the play was challenging my expectations. This was a very promising beginning – and Bored of Knives lived up to expectations.

There are a lot of good plays which
can be watched online at the moment and it is impossible to watch them all. But
one which it would be a great shame to miss is Greenwich Theatre’s exceptional
production of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. It is advertised as being
for people aged six and above and I think it is probably suitable for any age
above six. The adaption is very clever, the acting is of a very high standard
and it seems a bit unfair to describe it as a great play for children because
it is simply a great play.

An actor is preparing to go on for the
second half of a play. The first half maybe hasn’t gone terribly well and the
director isn’t the happiest she’s ever been. But the show must go on.
At first, it seems like a situation
most actors have been in, or thought they were in, or at least had nightmares
about being in. Sometimes it doesn’t just feel right.

This is an absolutely charming play about a young lady who
is trying to persuade her baby that now really would be a good time to go to
sleep. I remember those late nights well and I had double the fun, with twins!
They both seemed to have the ability to sleep through their twin’s crying, but
the moment of their falling back asleep again, although completely silent to my
insensitive ears, was somehow exceptionally noisy to the other twin and so
often resulted in their distressed awakening.

I love Zoom plays. I really do and I’ve seen a lot of really
great ones, including from Greenwich Theatre, which are so good, that the fact the
actors are on different screens and could be thousands of miles apart doesn’t matter.
There are also a lot of new plays which have been written for Zoom performances.
But to see a play like this, where the actors are not only
in the same location but able to touch, that’s not something you get to see
very much in current plays. In this play, we do get to see it and it’s really
great. I’m lucky enough not to be starved of hugs, but physical affection in
online plays is something that usually can’t happen. So it means that little
bit more when it is allowed to happen.

This play was written by Drew Paterson in response to
Greenwich Theatre’s Short Play Submission Sunday initiative. The prompt was ‘Connections’.
I don’t want to judge this too harshly or discourage people from watching it because I think it is worth watching. It can be very
difficult working to a prompt and I have no idea of the time frame in which the
prompt had to be completed. But this didn’t feel quite like a play to me.

bed. Mr Bear can’t sleep because Mrs Bear took the blanket and she was snoring
and sang songs in her sleep so Mr Bear went in Baby Bear’s room but he was
playing aeroplanes and everywhere he tried to sleep there was noises.

Junk was written in response to a one-word prompt for
Greenwich Theatre’s Short Play Submission Sunday initiative. The prompt was
Memories. The play is a conversation between a husband and wife. The husband
has just been to pub (newly-opened after lockdown) and has got talking to a guy
he kind of knows about memories.
