At the end of this play, book holder Lizzie Hughes said Henry IV Part II wasn’t like one big play, it was like lots of little plays, one after another. I was so glad to hear her say that because I was thinking exactly the same thing, but I wasn’t sure if I was brave enough to write it in my review.

Shakespeare had such a big output of
plays in such a range of styles, it’s natural that there will be some you like
better than others. Henry IV Part II is not one of my favourites but
it’s no reflection on the International Actors Ensemble’s performance that I
wasn’t able to give them a higher rating.
I do tend to enjoy cut performances of
this play more than the full thing (which isn’t far off being four hours long)
and there are parts which I feel maybe doesn’t need to be there but I do
applaud IAE for doing the full play. It’s a lot of very hard work (and they
don’t have as long an interval as actors who are performing the work onstage)
and I think they did really well.

Once upon a time there was a Prince named Hal. His father
was the King and as Hal was the oldest son he would become king when his father
died. However Hal did not want to be king. He was far too busy drinking in
taverns and playing tricks upon his friends to have any interest in ruling a
whole country. King Henry IV despaired of his son and his undesirable friends
but he had other matters to command his attention. His old enemy Hotspur was
leading a rebellion against Henry IV so the king had to gather his Arsenal against
him – and he also had to fight a battle wish himself when his health began to
fail.
