Henry VIII is probably Shakespeare’s least-known history play. King John is another one that isn’t performed often, but I think people with an interest in Shakespeare usually know it exists. Before I started watching Shakespeare in lockdown, I didn’t even know there was a Henry VIII, but I’ve been lucky enough to see four productions in lockdown. It’s a very enjoyable play – especially with a cast like this – with interesting characters and so many really powerful moments.

Henry VIII isn’t usually performed very often but this is the third production I’ve seen so I feel very lucky. It’s often the very last Shakespeare play people see to complete the set and I think it must be a lovely surprise because it’s a much better play than people expect.

Henry VIII isn’t one of the most popular Shakespeare plays. It wasn’t entirely written by Shakespeare, which puts a lot of people off. Shakespeare also doesn’t give us the full story - it ends with Henry being happy with one of his wives and we all know exactly how long that lasts. Henry also doesn’t have the fun of attempting to get rid of other people or the agony of other people attempting to get rid of him.

Henry VIII isn’t performed very often. A lot of big Shakespeare fans have never seen or read it and they’re surprised when they do. Henry VIII is known for having six wives but in this play he only has two wives. Katharine (of Aragon) who he is married to at the start and Anne Bullen (names in Shakespeare’s time had lots of different spellings) who he marries after he has divorced Katharine.

There are a lot of things about the play that aren’t accurate. Anne is written as a gentle, kind character. The real Anne was very well spoken but she did cause a lot of trouble by saying things she shouldn’t have said.
