I really liked this production of Twelfth Night. There are things in the play that make me sad but I think it was performed in the best way so I was less sad. There are lots of different ways you can perform Twelfth Night and I like it best when it is a comedy. I don’t know why because some of the things that happen are very serious but it was like they made all the characters as nice as they could be without making them seem not like themselves anymore.

Twelfth Night is Shake-Scene’s Christmas production and I think it’s a great choice. Twelfth Night is an important part of Christmas. There was always a bit of a fight at my infant school about who played the Wise Men in the Nativity play.

I don’t think Twelfth Night or Christmas is actually mentioned in the play, though Sir Toby starts to sing something about the twelfth day in December, so maybe the main part of the action takes place on ‘the twelfth night in December’. But I think the title comes from the time when the play was first performed and it’s possible the play is also set on or around Twelfth Night. In Elizabethan times, the Festival of Twelfth Night involved men and women exchanging clothes and generally behaving badly. Perhaps this is why the play ends happily for most of the characters – maybe everyone accepts all the happenings as another typical Twelfth Night.

It took a while to work out how to watch this but if you’re having problems, stick with it. It’s worth the time and effort. There have been a lot of great productions of Twelfth Night on offer during lockdown (this is at least my sixth) and this is right up there with the best. It also has a real individuality to its production and it didn’t feel like it was the sixth time I’d seen it in eight months. It felt fresh and new and I really enjoyed it.

There are probably only so many ways you can say how wonderful these Sofa Shakespeare productions are – but at the same time, you can’t say it too many times. It’s definitely not a case of ‘seen one, seen them all’.

Every single week they find new ways of making brilliant plays even more brilliant and they find new talented actors as well as bringing back people who have acted with them before in completely different roles. They surprise me every week because even though I know they’ll be good, I never guess all the different ways they’ll make the plays special.
