Organised Chaos is one of those plays you’d probably class as a comedy because it does make you laugh but underneath it has some very serious points to make.

I can’t say what makes The Helpline a clever monologue because that would give the whole game away. But take it from me, it’s clever.

A man is calling what seems to be some sort of sex line. His wife doesn’t know. He’s even got a new phone so it won’t show up on the phone bill. There’s a girl working there called Roxy and he really likes her a lot. No other girl will do. He’s getting desperate now. It seems almost like an obsession.

Alone Time is really sad. In all sorts of ways.

It’s sad because the main character hasn’t had the support he needs from his parents. He was actually planning on moving out now he had a job, but the pandemic came along and the job disappeared. His parents aren’t happy with the person he is and that hurts him. Of course it does.

I’m not going to say ‘we’ve all been through it’ because some people haven’t and I actually haven’t been through it properly because so far, it’s always turned out to be my boyfriend (this was before I got married and decided I’d better start pretending to be a grown-up) but I think it probably is a situation we’d all recognise as a nightmare.

It’s tough being in lockdown. The people who you usually quite enjoy living with can turn into the most annoying people on the planet. Or so half the occupants of my house seem to have told me. They never went quite to the length of the character in this monologue but I think most of us can relate. We’ve probably either felt this anger in ourselves or we’ve felt it directed at us.

I hope I never have to sink this low. I seriously hope I never have to sink half as low. It’s bad enough that my school production has been cancelled three times and my professional engagement. I can’t believe I’m saying this but it’s lucky I’m still young enough to go to school. At least I don’t have to go out and get a boring job. Or stay at home and get a boring job. That would be just too humiliating. And if I have to do the job the main character does in this play I would die.

The woman in this monologue seems to be in a state of intoxication. She seems drunk and she talks about drinking. She rambles, sometimes making no sense, other times making perfect sense.

Most people know someone who gets like this when they’re drunk. Though a lot of them are exactly the same when they’re sober.

Trigger: Abortion (I probably shouldn’t say that really but I don’t want anyone to watch this without knowing and be upset by it)

I relate to this story a lot. Not the trigger part. Just the feeling that I’m not that interesting really and that I only become interesting after I’ve had quite a few drinks. I don’t do it now because I have to be more responsible but sometimes I wish I could. A lot of people have said to me that I probably wasn’t as interesting as I thought I was and I probably made a right idiot of myself (and some of the time, I probably did) but it really didn’t seem that way at the time.

But then I thought we’d better go back to the beginning or I’m never going to remember what we’ve watched and what we haven’t.

A Permanent Scar by Rachel Flynn draws you in instantly. An unnamed man, played by Sean Cernow, is talking about a girl he’d liked for a long time. This really is the story of ‘the one who got away’ because he’s speaking in the past tense. I was wondering straight away if she’s just not part of his life anymore or if her departure from his life is as permanent as the scar mentioned in the title (a quote from the song Drops of Jupiter by Train).
