Jack is a little boy who has gone on a
school trip. The monologue is performed by his mother, who gave him permission
to go on the trip.
She has a lot of mixed feelings. She is worried. There are things that could go wrong. But she loves Jack.
This monologue is very short, only a few
minutes long, so there isn’t much more I can say about the story without giving
too much away, but Anne Price writes the story sensitively and sympathetically.
It’s also carefully structured so the piece appears like the spontaneous words
of a loving mother, but it’s also presented in a sequence which is clear and
logical.
Katie Sherrard portrays a mother’s
worries brilliantly. Nicole Behan directs this touching performance, giving it
an intimate and almost conversational feel, as though Katie is speaking
directly to the audience and then pausing in order to hear our replies. It’s a
really lovely piece.
