The Theatre Royal Stratford East have
created a series of short videos to help us through our third national
lockdown. I’ve only watched one so far, but the titles look interesting and
varied and I’m looking forward to watching them.
This play explores the situation many of us are in right now. All alone, or at least with the same group of people. Unable to see everyone we want to see. Unable to go anywhere the Government hasn’t put on their approved list. Even if you’re not alone, it can be a difficult time, but the character in this play is alone.
This video takes us through the
process a lot of people have been through. Trying to think of something to do.
Trying it out. Discovering it’s not quite what you want. But not giving up
because the very next thing you might think of might be the one thing that
makes lockdown fun. At least for today.
It’s fun and inspiring and Alex
Lutton, who wrote the play as well as starring in it, is clearly a talented
guy. Director Sita Thomas creates a nice contrast between the Before and the
After. (That is a bit vague, but with a nine-minute piece, you don’t really
want to give anything away.) There are some great costumes too. The costume
supervisors for this production are Felicity Furore and Lydia Hardiman and they
show how much a great costume can add to a performance.
When you’re in lockdown, it might feel
as though you have nothing, but with imagination and inventiveness, it is
possible to create something very special.
