Deborah has decided to run a book
club. It’s specifically for women who feel a bit lonely. She never actually
said it was for older women but everyone seems to understand that. All the
women in the group are above a certain age.
Until Charlene arrives.
Charlene is not only 30 years younger
than any of the other members, she’s… not the sort of person Deborah is used
to. Deborah doesn’t want to be prejudiced. She wants to ‘live and let live’.
She allows Charlene to join the group.
But Deborah and Charlene have very
different ideas and something’s got to give…
David Hendon has written this
monologue really well. There are moments when the characters don’t quite sound
like conventional women but who says all women have to be conventional? They
are good, interesting characters and that’s the important thing.
Christian Durham directs and the way
the scene is set up and the way the props are used tell you a lot about
Deborah, even before the play starts.
Phillipa Wilson does a really good job
of playing Deborah. It is hard to play a person with negative qualities, like
prejudices, and still make them likeable and interesting. At first, I don’t
like Deborah so much but the story was funny so I wanted to carry on watching.
But I did start to like her a lot more.
