A young woman is in debt so she visits
a debt counsellor for support. She’s handed a long document to read, but she’s
confused.
It doesn’t make sense. There’s got to
be a catch somewhere… hasn’t there?
James McLindon has written a very enjoyable play in which the Prospective Client tries to make sense of this apparent anomaly. Director Gaëlle Gognau judges the humour nicely – it’s a funny play, but it’s not consciously funny. Both characters take the situation very seriously. This means firstly that we care about the characters (one of them, anyway) and we’re actually maybe almost convinced…
Yuyu Kitamura is instantly engaging as
the Prospective Client. She’s amusing, but she’s also likeable and convincing
as a human being and we do want her to make the right decision… whatever that
is. Kim Berrios Lin is great as the slightly wacky but very persuasive Debt
Counsellor.
Isabella So has edited this together
beautifully. I’ve just realised this play was almost certainly made on Zoom,
but I wasn’t aware of it at all.
