This play was written by Drew Paterson in response to
Greenwich Theatre’s Short Play Submission Sunday initiative. The prompt was ‘Connections’.
I don’t want to judge this too harshly or discourage people from watching it because I think it is worth watching. It can be very
difficult working to a prompt and I have no idea of the time frame in which the
prompt had to be completed. But this didn’t feel quite like a play to me.
Four people speak on Zoom, mostly in two groups of two. The subject is androids and computers and whether they’re capable of thinking. This question is considered in context of various subjects, including the three mentioned in the title – sex, religion and politics.
It does bother me slightly that the male and non-binary characters
are presented as being slightly stupid and the female characters are presented
as being pretentious, but at
least it’s insulting everybody. Actors Lily Demir, Owen Baxter, Shaofan Wilson
and Daniel Adeosun deliver the lines well and the ideas coherently.
It’s very interesting, but it’s not like watching a play.
There’s no real plot or story. The characters are limited, though I think that
might have been intentional. The play hasn’t inspired me to change my thinking
on the subject of androids or computers, or to research it in more detail. But the
idea behind the play is intriguing, some of it is very funny and it definitely has the potential to be
developed into a more complete work.
