A 2020 Vision is a really beautiful performance which is part of #TTFringe2. It’s all about the pandemic, which has caused a lot of sadness, but this play is full of happiness and hope.
It was written by Emma Wood ‘and the people of Victoria, Australia’ and it includes a selection of so many of the different situations the people of Victoria have faced since the start of the pandemic. Their words were taken from a questionnaire which asked fourteen questions over fourteen days to about two hundred people.
There is no official plot running through A 2020 Vision and the nine actors play many different roles, but it feels like it is a plot because it’s about something that has been the story of our lives.
It is directed by Adrian Rice and Susan Rundle and I really love the way the actors sound so natural, which makes them seem more like ordinary people and less like they’re playing a dramatic role. I love dramatic roles usually, but I think this subject matter is so emotional and so important and this is a really powerful way of telling it.
The stories give us so many different examples of pandemic stories. Lots of them will be familiar because of our own experiences and the people we’ve heard about, but even when a situation is unfamiliar, we still know the setting really well so it’s very easy to understand how it must have felt.
The nine actors are all really good. They tell the stories so naturally and believably and with so much convincing emotion, it is just like hearing from the real people these sad things happened to. It is like a series of very short but very moving monologues.
A 2020 Vision
is a brilliant idea and it really does work very well.
