Night Work is another incredibly creepy original story from Moth Sanctuary Productions in their Penny Dreadfuls series. As always, the standard is very high and each story introduces us to a completely different world with new characters, situations and horrors.

James is a regular in the local inn. He’s not the most gregarious of men, but the barman knows him and knows where he likes to sit. He probably doesn’t, however, know the nature of James’ work. If that became generally known, he probably wouldn’t be nearly as good at it.

At last, it’s time. James mounts his horse and sets off into the darkness. He has made his plans carefully… but there are many things that could go wrong.

Andrew Bate has written this story brilliantly. Although James isn’t the most likeable of heroes, Andrew captures our attention right from the start and makes us want to know what happens next. He tells the story calmly with just the merest hint of menace, leading us towards something which we know will be horrific, without giving us any idea of what it might be. The descriptions are vivid and it was so easy to imagine being alone in the woods at night… with something behind you.

Night Work is the kind of story where you almost can’t cope with the tension and you want to shout at the character to stop being a twit and go home… but don’t do that. You don’t want to miss a single word of this spine-chilling story.
