Available until: 22nd March at about 7pm.

Letters Live is a compilation of letters, written by people of different ages, genders and races, all in different situations. Some are from the century before last; one is very recent. The letters were originally presented in a couple of live shows with the same title and some of the best are compiled together here as part of a digital event.

The letters vary. Some are hilarious, though I feel a bit uncomfortable laughing at some of them as I think they might have been written in earnest on a subject that really matters to the writers. Some are incredibly moving. All are intriguing and illuminating. They introduce us to people and situations we don’t know personally and teach us so much about how the world was – and is.

When you read a letter, you don’t always get a strong impression of what the writer is like, but these letters all have a strong sense of personality and they are vividly brought to life by a range of actors including Olivia Colman, Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch.

There are letters to and about celebrities. There are letters of complaint. Letters containing advice. Comedian Fred Allen writes a brilliant letter to an insurance company after suffering a series of accidents. An eleven year old girl decided to give Abraham Lincoln style advice. Novelist John Cheever details a fascinating relationship he had with a friend’s cat.

There are letters from a suffragette and from a former slave. There’s a powerful and moving letter from a refugee.

It is so fascinating to hear these letters and to get to know, just for a few minutes, some really inspiring people.

Letters Live is part of a series with the next one dropping on Monday 22nd March. I will definitely be there.
