Time Lapse is the story of four sisters – Lucy, Angela, Minnie and Sophie. They’re very close. But they’re not all still alive. One of them has died.
The others are sad. Of course they are. They miss their sister. But they also don’t want to suffer as she did. They don’t want to die.
I would have said they had no choice in the matter. Some of them believe that too. But there have been medical advances. Ways of slowing the ageing process. Some of them aren’t too sure about it, but at the same time, it’s tempting.
Stewart Melton has written a fascinating story on a subject most of us have probably thought about. Even if we’re nowhere near that stage ourselves, we probably all know someone who is. It examines questions and issues from a personal viewpoint of three women. The positives. The possibilities. And the negatives.
As the title suggests, the story has time lapses. Director Toby Clarke fills the gaps with haunting music, composed by Roly Botha. The music is beautiful, but it also gives us time to think, not just about the characters but about ourselves and what we would do if we had that choice. Maureen Rose, Karla Ptacek and Roz Borley characterise the surviving sisters really well. They’re different people, but there’s something in their voices that shows the closeness between them.
This is an excellent series of plays, all very different
in style and character. Only one more to listen to… but I’d love to hear more
in the future from the Southwark Elders Company.
