Lockdown must be so difficult for the people who have just started a relationship. It’s obviously way too soon to move in and it’s not always practical to bubble so what are you left with? A meeting at a two-metre distance, shouting your personal business in the street? At one time, even that wasn’t allowed.

All you’ve got is Zoom (other video software is also available). Talking on a screen to someone. It’s just not the natural next stage in the relationship and it’s bound to feel really strange. Because it is strange. Even people who have been using Zoom for ages for work and long-distance social calls are unlikely to have used it for dates. Maybe a first date if you’re wondering whether to travel the length of the country to meet someone from Tinder (remember when you could travel the length of the country without breaking the law? When castles were places you visited for fun, rather than an alternative to Specsavers?), but not someone you’ve already been out on dates with who might only live round the corner.

But then the pandemic arrived and many new couples found themselves on Zoom dates, including the couple in this video. It’s fair to say it’s awkward. She doesn’t know what to say. He might think he knows what to say, but actually, he really doesn’t.

Mark Goldthorp has written a wonderfully awkward conversation and his direction enhances that. It’s the sort of conversation that would absolutely make you cringe if you overheard it in public, but you get some enjoyment from it when it’s safely on a screen. Amy Griffiths visibly tries to rein in her annoyance with Jason Kajdi’s enthusiastically oblivious chatter.

You really do feel for both of them. The only question is, which one do you feel for more?
