It’s 2050 and the world is all about social media. A lot of people can handle being a social media star, but put them into a real social situation and they doesn’t really know what to do.
Then a social media star dies. It’s an accident… isn’t it? Or is it murder?
A CEO and her employees speculate. They have their own ideas about who the murderer might be – and they live in a society where being quiet is suspicious. How is anyone supposed to know what you’re thinking if you don’t speak?
Blood in the Water was written by the DreamArts Performance Company. They’re all aged 13-19 years old unless they have special educational needs, in which case they can stay until they’re 25. They wrote it, directed it, starred in it and also did some of the filming and editing.
It’s seriously impressive. I love the way it’s written and the opening is especially good. It’s very exciting and interesting and although I obviously wanted to know who the murderer is and part of my brain was trying to figure it out, I was also enjoying watching the characters interact with one another
Ava Doherty is terrifying as Herberta T. Appleton, the controlling and competent CEO. Isabella Moon’s cruel bully Rowan is backed up by the kind but easily-intimidated Kaci, played by Amber Meyrick. Melody, played by Michelle (who is mononymous) clearly has some vulnerabilities but wants to keep in with the crowd. New girl Maya (Abeer Rizvi) calmly and quietly tries to negotiate the impossibilities of office politics, but maybe she’s a bit too quiet for her own good. Sina Michael is touching as the tragic Isabelle.
DreamArts had the support of Callum Patrick Hughes (also
a great composer), Marcella Bruno and Jessica Oquendo, but it sounds like the
company did most of the work and the result is a very absorbing film with a
much more sensible and logical plot than many crime dramas and books.
