Lem & Ginge: The Princess of Kakos is an audio comedy in four parts. It’s about two actors who are looking for some stage work. I’m sure most stage actors can relate to this at the moment. Camping in a field is cheaper than a Travelodge and it’s while they’re in this field that they discover the Princess of Kakos has a big problem.
It’s a lot like a fairy tale, only with a lot more swearing and sex. The two actors, Ell and Mary, who rechristen themselves Lem & Ginge, set off on a quest to find the princess’ lost voice. It’s not the easiest thing to find but there’s a lot of fun along the way. For us, if not so much for Lem and Ginge.
Mary Higgins and Ell Porter write and star in this funny, crazy adventure. The dialogue is fast and snappy and the story has some great twists and turns which have a real fairy tale feel to them. One thing I like is that they sometimes discuss something that is very common in a fairy tale and talk about how crazy it is. And they’re always right.
Mary and Ell deliver the humour really well and Sharon D. Clarke is great as the princess. I love the irony of the person with the lost voice being played by someone who is famous for her voice, though she is a really good actor too. She’s played lots of really varied roles.
They meet lots of other characters too. One of the characters is Bird, who is played by Tom Foskett-Barnes, who did a bit of everything on this show. He’s responsible for the sound, the music and the editing. The music is really clever. It isn’t a musical but every so often the characters do burst into song and they have really good voices. My favourite song is based on a song from West Side Story. It might not be the one you’re thinking of.
Lem & Ginge: The Princess of Kakos is a lot of
fun and the characters have a lot of promise so I could definitely imagine Lem
& Ginge becoming a series.
