Cells was originally shown in a series of seven episodes. The longest is six minutes and twenty-three seconds and the shortest is three minutes and thirty-nine seconds. One episode was uploaded every day for a week.

At the end of the week, the seven videos were put together into one video of just over half an hour. If you’d rather watch them one at a time, the single episodes are still available on Metta Theatre’s YouTube channel.

It is a really lovely story. There are lots of stories where two people are drawn to each other and end up falling in love, but this one is a bit different. There are two men in this and they’re both connected to a university. It’s the younger one’s first day and the older one’s last day – he had a job in the labs, but it’s come to an end. They don’t meet.

The younger man starts to settle into university, but it’s actually online that he makes a really big connection to someone. They talk about Fortnite and stay up till 2am. But they are basically strangers.

It’s a very emotional story where you really care about both men. You know exactly what you want to happen, but you don’t know if it will. It’s a musical with lots of songs, most of them duets with the two men experiencing similar feelings, even though they have very different lives. Ben Glasstone’s music is very upbeat and happy. Some of it is more traditional musical theatre, some of it has a bluesy sort of feel to it.

Writer and director P. Burton-Morgan got the whole piece together in lockdown. They show the characters’ emotions really well and really make you care about them, even though you only know these characters for half an hour. I’m not totally sure if the scientific side would completely work, but I might be wrong about that and it’s a great story anyway. I really like the way that when they’re chatting online, they speak their words aloud. That’s really clever.

Clive Rowe and Lem Knights play the two men. They are both really likeable, their voices suit the style of the music and blend well together. They have really good chemistry too.

It says this is Season 1 so there will probably be at least one other season. I’m really excited about that and it will be great to see how the men’s relationship has developed.
