Lost Lisa Marie is the first in what I believe is set to be a chilling but wonderful series from Moth Sanctuary Productions. The company have uploaded a number of brilliant stories to YouTube, all beautifully read, but these are original stories from the Moth Sanctuary Productions team.
The story of Lost Lisa Marie was originally devised as a song by Andrew Bate of Moth Sanctuary Productions. It’s a quiet but deeply haunting song and it’s easy to see how the character of Lisa Marie has remained in Andrew’s mind, asking for her full story to be told. I would recommend starting with the story, as I did, so you get the full effect of not knowing what’s going to happen next, but I’ll include the link to the song at the end of the review.
Andrew also wrote the story and it’s outstanding. The song describes Lisa Marie as she is now, but the story expands on the song in a way which really enables us to get to know and to care for Lisa Marie as an individual, as a teenager in love. Andrew writes of happiness, but underneath, there’s a feeling of foreboding, creeping up on us as it creeps up on Lisa Marie. The fact we can see it coming makes no difference to the tragedy and horror.
The story is read by Chloe Gorman. She reads the story beautifully and hypnotically, with limited and controlled but still audible emotion. It’s told by Lisa Marie in the present, not the past, but we can still feel – and feel for – the girl she used to be, as well as the person she is now.
The emotions in the story are heightened by atmospheric music and the subtle use of outdoor sounds really help us to feel as though we’re right there with Lisa Marie.
An intoxicating and truly unnerving story, wonderfully written and read.
