Jane is a de-motivational speaker, a
wellness consultant. She used to invent things, but they weren’t successful.
She always got told that her ideas were crap.
So now, Jane tells other people
they’re crap. And gets paid for it. (Isn’t that just the best idea? Maybe I
could do that. I’ll change his review to a one-star and say it’s complete crap.
It wouldn’t be true, but it’s an idea.)
Jane wants to help the over-confident. The people who have high expectations which are never fulfilled. She listens to them, then helps them to realise how crap they are. (Has anyone got Boris Johnson’s number? Not for me, obviously. So I can pass it on to Jane.)
Jane seems to think this is a totally
original idea. I’d like to tell her it is, but it’s not. She is basically just
a therapist. Only without a degree so you can’t get her free on the NHS.
But the thing is… with her stories to
tell and her ideas and her perky nature (how does that not irritate the
you-know-what out of me? How?), Jane is actually really lovely. She’s
sweet, funny, interesting, she’s great to listen to… and maybe she even does
have a point? Slightly?
Chris Dance has invented a brilliant
character who easily holds the attention for seventeen minutes. It’s directed
by Jake Murray and although Jane is just sitting, talking into a camera, there
are so many tiny things about the video that help to bring everything together.
Amy Gavin plays the role of Jane and
her characterisation is perfect. She is animated, she can tell a long story in
an interesting way and she’s hilarious. Jane also often imitates other people –
sometimes real people, sometimes not – and she brings each one to life with
exactly the right accent, voice and personality.
But I do have to dispute one thing
Jane said. It isn’t impossible to tickle yourself. I just tried it. I
haven’t screamed that loudly since last week when I found out the shoes I wanted
were sold out in my size.
